The world’s approach to food policy challenges is largely siloed. Some groups focus primarily on addressing obesity, while others work to combat hunger. Others focus on food safety and security. Still others concentrate on the environmental effects of modern food production.

But just as pulling a loose thread can cause a knitted sweater to unravel, addressing a single food problem in isolation can have unintended consequences. Duke University hopes to address that phenomenon by exploring the possibility of a new World Food Policy Center that would encourage cross-disciplinary problem-solving. The effort also responds to growing student interest in understanding food systems.

Four foundations from across the country are joining forces to learn together and help strengthen relationships with their grantees and communities. The cohort, part of Grantmakers for Effective Organizations’ (GEO) inaugural Change Incubator, will help grantmakers tackle complex challenges and accelerate the pace of change within their own organizations. GEO members Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation, in Durham, N.C., Episcopal Health Foundation, in Houston, The Heinz Endowments, in Pittsburgh, and The Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation, in Little Rock, Ark., will focus on strengthening relationships with their grantees because authentic partner engagement leads to better results.

19 North Carolina Institutions Receive Grants to Increase Physical Activity for Children Through Changes to Childcare Outdoor Learning Environments (2014)

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC) Foundation partnered with the Natural Learning Initiative (NLI), College of Design, NC State University, to provide almost $100,000 in Healthy Living Equipment Grants to 19 institutions (14 local Partnership for Children / Smart Start recipients and five community colleges). Equipment grants will be used to increase physical activity of young children by improving childcare outdoor play and learning areas — for example, adding wheeled toy pathways, stepping stones, gardening opportunities, fruit trees, gathering areas, and shade structures.
