October 25, 2019 – We are pleased to share that we have recently approved five grants. Please join us in welcoming the following organizations:


16-month investment of $140,000 to Pisgah Legal Services to sustain a medical-legal partnership between Mountain Area Health Education Center and Pisgah Legal Services to address social determinants of health for patients with limited resources.




Three-year investment of $545,000 to NC Alliance for Health to convene the North Carolina Food Access Task Force to build consensus with, and mobilize, stakeholders to address food insecurity through policy change.




One-year investment of $640,000 to the North Carolina Partnership for Children to support Shape NC – their comprehensive early childhood obesity prevention initiative.




One-year investment of $80,000 to Farmer Foodshare to support their Food Ambassadors program during the 2019-2020 school year in Durham elementary schools.




One-year investment of $112,300 to Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project to continue their Growing Minds @ University work to change food purchasing, promotion, preparation, and education practices at schools, early care and education sites, as well as other institutions.



John Lumpkin Joins Board of National Food Research Organization

October 1, 2019 – Blue Cross NC Foundation president John Lumpkin has been appointed to the board of directors of the Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research, joining the organization as it looks to increase its portfolio with research at the intersection of agriculture and health.

One year investment of $25,000 to Upstream Works to support developing and executing a feasibility study for a central kitchen serving Durham County Public Schools.




Three year investment of $1.05M to the North Carolina Center for Nonprofits to support developing a capacity building approach with an equity lens to increase nonprofit learning, foster collaboration, and strengthen the infrastructure of nonprofits.




Seven month investment of $25,000 to The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Adams School of Dentistry to support the development of a curriculum that promotes an interprofessional focus on oral health and prepares learners to be advocates as well as clinicians.

June 20, 2019 – We are pleased to share that we have recently approved three grants. Please join us in welcoming the following organizations:


One year investment of $34,000 to Mountain Community Health Partnership to support the development of a safety-net dental clinic in Mitchell County, enabling the organization to leverage the necessary resources, expertise, and consulting support required to secure equipment and infrastructure funding.



One year investment of $183,000 to UNC‐Wilmington’s Center for Healthy Communities to support their role as a regional public health training agency to engage a technical assistance provider and support health departments to assume a leadership role in the local implementation of Medicaid transformation. This grant is co‐funded in partnership with Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust.



One year investment of $200,000 to NC Counts Coalition to support engagement with trusted messengers in hard to count areas to encourage and support full count activities in the 2020 Census.

John R. Lumpkin Named Blue Cross NC Foundation President

February 27, 2019 – John R. Lumpkin, MD, MPH has been named president of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation.  Lumpkin most recently served as Senior Vice President, Programs for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF). He will start April 22, 2019.
