Most North Carolinians have experienced a natural disaster - from fires and floods to hurricanes and tornadoes. Often, these events catch citizens and communities unaware or unprepared.
Groups in Dare and Johnston counties are working to change those outcomes. They share the goal of increased preparedness and are training their communities for proactive response in the face of emergencies, particularly the impact on at risk populations.
Both groups participated in the Emergency Preparedness Grants Program. This one-time initiative, launched in response to Hurricane Katrina, supported 11 designed to improve emergency preparedness planning impacting vulnerable populations throughout our state.
