At George Watts Elementary School in Durham children are learning inside the classroom, but until recently they had limited opportunities for development outside of the school. Their playground was large and shaded, but lacked the age-appropriate equipment they desired.
The school's parents and PTA members stepped in to help; and through a grassroots, collaborative fundraising effort, they were able to raise money from several different partners, including a $5,000 BCBSNC Foundation equipment grant.
Today, the children at George Watts Elementary and surrounding neighborhoods can exercise their minds and their bodies through the slides, steps and tunnels of the new play structure.
