Increasing the effectiveness of nonprofit organizations and their leaders.
The BCBSNC Foundation provides broad, basic capacity-building support via trainings and workshops. This training helps nonprofits prepare their organizations and staff to better serve by increasing their knowledge of best practices and strengthening internal processes and procedures.
The Foundation’s signature workshop is Healthy Community Institute for Nonprofit Excellence (HCI). HCI is offered twice a year and is free to nonprofits across the state. The workshop is for executive directors, senior leadership and board members. The two-day workshop features training on the fundamentals of strategic planning, fundraising, and outcomes, along with a strong emphasis on board development and governance. Additional follow-up support is provided, including webinars and relevant online tools and resources.
Capacity building grant dollars are available only for BCBSNC Foundation grantees from the Healthy Active Communities and Health of Vulnerable Populations focus areas. These grants allow the Foundation to invest in strengthening organizations that are aligned with our mission of improving the health and well-being of North Carolinians, specifically in the areas of healthy eating, physical activity, and primary and dental care access through safety net providers.
BCBSNC Foundation also partners with the NC Center for Nonprofits, WNC Nonprofit Pathways and Hispanics in Philanthropy to provide resources, tools, workshops, seminars, consulting, and technical assistance to broadly support nonprofits using their services.
There are no updates in this focus area at this time.
Healthy Community Institute:
Our unique two-day board and staff program focused on organizational change has helped more than 975 nonprofit organizations throughout North Carolina strengthen their organizational capacity.
"Staff and board members from our agency had two days of uninterrupted training and support to look closely at our board development, fundraising and strategic planning efforts. The consultants understood our mission and worked personally with us to discuss issues facing our organization. And after the event, we still have all of the online resources so that we don't have to reinvent the wheel. I highly recommend HCI for any nonprofit agency!" - Testimonial from Steven R. Strom, M.Ed., MBA, Executive Director, The Arc of Wake County and 2011 HCI Participant
