Nonprofit Excellence:

Increasing the effectiveness of nonprofit organizations and their leaders.

The BCBSNC Foundation provides broad, basic capacity-building support via trainings and workshops. This training helps nonprofits prepare their organizations and staff to better serve by increasing their knowledge of best practices and strengthening internal processes and procedures.

The Foundation’s signature workshop, Healthy Community Institute for Nonprofit Excellence (HCI), ran for the last 13 years as capacity building support to all North Carolina nonprofits. During that time the Foundation trained more than 1,000 organizations through almost 50 workshops across the state.

Currently, Healthy Community Institute is undergoing a refresh process to ensure that the curriculum, instructional design and follow-up assistance is as relevant as it can be and meets boards and staff members where they are at for the best experience possible.

The BCBSNC Foundation remains committed to building the leadership of boards and staff, and a revised program will re-launch in 2015. So while the program is not going away, the Foundation is taking a pause to evaluate and benchmark best practices to ensure the greatest impact for this type of training. If you are interested in learning more about the 2015 program when details are released, please sign up here.

Capacity building grant dollars are available only for BCBSNC Foundation grantees from the Healthy Active Communities and Health of Vulnerable Populations focus areas. These grants allow the Foundation to invest in strengthening organizations that are aligned with our mission of improving the health and well-being of North Carolinians, specifically in the areas of healthy eating, physical activity, and primary and dental care access through safety net providers.

BCBSNC Foundation also partners with the NC Center for Nonprofits, WNC Nonprofit Pathways and Hispanics in Philanthropy to provide resources, tools, workshops, seminars, consulting, and technical assistance to broadly support nonprofits using their services.
