North Carolina Assocation of Free Clinics
Grantee:
North Carolina Association of Free Clinics
(Winston-Salem)
Current Grant:
Five-year, $10 Million (2004)
Project:
Strengthen and expand the services of free clinics and pharmacies throughout North Carolina.
Impact:
In 2008, the Foundation entered the final year of an initial five-year, $10 million partnership with the North Carolina Association of Free Clinics (NCAFC). The initiative is designed to strengthen and expand the services of free clinics and pharmacies throughout North Carolina.
In April of 2008, the Foundation announced an unprecedented second five-year collaboration with NCAFC.
Starting in 2009, the Foundation’s renewed commitment will provide continued financial support for the 74 clinics offering care in 79 counties across the state. 85 percent of BCBSNC Foundation support directly reaches individual clinics, with every dollar distributed to member free clinics equating to more than $4.00 in services to their clients.
Since the partnership began, total patient visits to free clinics have increased by almost 50 percent and the number of free clinics has increased by 32 percent, from 56 to 74. As a result, North Carolina now has one of the nation’s largest network of free clinics.
In April 2007 and 2008 we partnered with NCAFC for their Statewide Free Clinic Open Houses, hosted in conjunction with National Cover the Uninsured Week. Each of the Association’s clinics participated, and more than 70 percent of clinics were successful in utilizing the Open House to expand their volunteer and donor outreach efforts.
