Who We Are

The Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation is a private, charitable foundation established as an independent entity by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina in 2000. Over the past two decades we have been honored to work with – and support – organizations, government entities, and community partnerships across the state, investing more than $200 million in North Carolina through grants, collaborations, and special initiatives. While our mission remains consistent, our strategies and priorities shift over time, reflecting what we learn about our organization, the work of our grantees and partners, as well as what is happening around us.

Above all, we’re focused on helping make North Carolina a place where everyone – regardless of race or ethnicity, geography or age, financial situation or education level – has the opportunity to be as healthy as possible. This is what is known as health equity. We recognize that for many individuals and communities this is just not the case, and that policies, rules, institutional practices, and social norms create barriers to good health. By investing in solutions that account for and address these factors, while maintaining a commitment to understand and reflect the perspectives of the people, organizations, and communities we partner with and support, our hope is that we can help make the opportunity for good health attainable for more people living in our state.

A Commitment to the Place We Call Home

North Carolina is in our name, and it is at the center of all we do. Over the past two decades, we have developed and built upon grantmaking and other practices designed to partner with and support the work of organizations and collaborations large and small and in communities all across the state. Collectively, we can realize a shared vision for the health of our home state and all who live here.
